STEMtots – Light

Explore STEMtots

Join us for at our STEMtots sessions, specially designed for preschool children!

These free-flow, hands-on mornings encourage young children to explore science through play. This session is all about Light, with open-ended activities to spark discover and wonder.

Here’s a sneak peek at what your child can explore:

Shadow Play

What happens when we shine a light on different objects? Using torches and a variety of small objects, children will experiment with making shadows on the wall, discovering how light interacts with different shapes and sizes. Will their hands become shadow puppets? What happens when they move the torch closer or further away?

Rainbow Magic with CDs

Rainbows aren’t just found in the sky! With CDs and a beam of light, little scientists will create their own rainbow reflections, learning how light bends and separates into different colours. A mesmerising way to introduce the science of light and colour!

Mirror, Mirror: Playing with Reflections

How does light bounce and change direction? With the light table and mirrors, children will experiment with reflections, discovering how light travels and plays tricks on our eyes. Can they angle the mirrors to send light in different directions?

Light and Dark: Day & Night Creations

The world looks different in the daytime and at night! Using craft materials, your tots will create their own day and night pictures, exploring how light and darkness shape the world around us. A wonderful way to introduce early learning about the Sun, Moon, and stars!

STEMtots sessions are the perfect way to nurture curiosity and introduce early scientific thinking through messy play and discovery.

Run in blocks of six sessions during term-time, each session will revolve around a different theme. Sessions can be booked individually or as a block (with a small discount). They are free flow sessions so you can turn up at any time during the session.

Our Science Communicators will be on hand throughout each session to help you and your family explore our exhibits and get the most out of our activities.

Sessions are designed to involve parents/carers so we do ask that you stay with children. Ticket price includes one child and one adult attending each session.  Younger siblings are welcome to attend free of charge.
