Putting their best foot forward for young learners
An epic 20-mile route
The Project Managements Team’s walk took place on Wednesday 17 June, starting at Babraham Research Campus and finishing at Bidwell House in Trumpington.
The walkers took in a number of the Cambridge sites they have been involved with, including Babraham Research Campus Masterplan, St John’s College and Cambridge Science Park.
At the mid-way point they took a well-earned lunch break at Cambridge Science Centre – the Charity they are raising money for.
Ensuring all 4-11 year olds, regardless of background, can access the world of STEM
Lucie Ellis Assistant Project Manager who – together with Becky Ridgewell Project Manager – stepped forward to lead the initiative, explains why they feel so passionate about supporting their work:
“Cambridge Science Centre is all about making science, technology, engineering and maths accessible to everyone regardless of their background and circumstances – and from an age that really makes a difference.
We want to help them open the doors to even more 4-11 year olds who may otherwise face social, economic and geographical barriers to the world of STEM that influences so much of the world around them, including the science parks and buildings we construct all around the City.
Walking around our various previous and current sites whilst raising money for such a great cause, seemed like the perfect plan – although twelve pairs of feet are feeling the impact of that choice now!”
Helping the Charity reach underserved communities
Kath Austin, Director of Business Development at Cambridge Science Centre explains why support like this is so important for the Charity:
“Many people know us as a visitor attraction but aren’t aware of the fully-funded support we provide to underserved communities across our region. We work closely with community groups including the North Cambridge Community Partnership, Little Miracles, Red Hen Project and Abbey People.
Even public access to our Fen-based satellite centre in Wisbech is funded by charitable fundraising activities. We want fun science opportunities, education and innovation to belong to everyone and are really happy to have Bidwells support us in this way.
The money raised will ensure programmes like Building a Better Future (about the built environment) and Your Smart World (a deep dive into all things digital technology and AI) reach as many children as possible.”
