Students take control following the appearance of a new disease in this immersive hand-on science challenge!
Across three challenge sessions, participating Upper Key Stage 2 students will use analytical skills and independent thinking to understand the spread of a new, unknown disease, then use teamwork and data-driven decision making to develop a medicinal response to the disease, and then communication and creativity take the forefront as we need to inform and engage the population with our solution!
It is an exciting, dynamic, student-owned day you and your school won’t forget!
Underpinned by world-leading science from Roche and experienced science engagement from Cambridge Science Centre, this Challenge Day is a fully-funded and led experience with links across the curriculum.
Interested? We’re taking this project to schools across the country with delivery in Birmingham, Doncaster, Hull, Lincolnshire, Exeter, Welwyn and Peterborough. In each school we can engage with up to 120 students. Together with their teachers, the students take on the roles of an Epidemic Crisis Response Unit to solve challenges.
Roche, one of the world’s largest biotech companies, focuses on finding new medicines and diagnostics, using data-based insights to evolve the practice of medicine and help patients live longer, better lives. Members of the Roche team have provided real-world science and personal career information that is highlighted throughout the challenges. Cambridge Science Centre and Roche are committed to bringing STEM learning to underserved areas across the country and allowing students to experience an exciting day of science in their own schools.
The Challenge Days are designed to coincide with British Science Week in March 2025, at a time when many Primary Schools run science days. We provide all the resources, kit and consumables and we liaise with the class teachers prior to the event to ensure that they are fully prepared.
So far, we have visited 11 schools and engaged with 856 students. In March 2025 we will visit a further 49 schools with a potential reach of a total of over 5000 students across the country.
Teachers and pupils have loved the interactive and challenging aspects of the day, and the real-world concepts allow students to understand how this project is relevant to them.
Some recent teacher feedback:
