Cracking Concrete – and the Science Behind It!

What do you really know about concrete? You might walk on it every day without giving it much thought, but did you know it’s the most widely produced material on Earth? And it’s packed full of fascinating science!

Over the Easter holidays, we were thrilled to host a special event all about – you guessed it – concrete! We were joined by the brilliant team from CEMEX UK, who brought their expertise, enthusiasm, and a hands-on approach to science that our visitors loved. As a valued member of our Executive Council, it was a real pleasure to collaborate with CEMEX for this event.

Children and families got stuck in exploring the surprising properties of concrete – including how it behaves when wet and dry, how water moves through it, and how its strength can be tested. Who knew concrete could be so fun?

Sustainability was a big part of what CEMEX do, so the team shared how they’re helping to shape the future of construction through smart, sustainable choices – from re-using materials and reducing waste, to creating low-carbon alternatives that help protect our planet.

It was a brilliant way to mix science, sustainability and hands-on discovery – just the kind of learning we love at Cambridge Science Centre.
