The Built Environment is both a national priority and a powerful context for STEM learning.

Across the UK, employers report acute shortages in engineering, construction and digital skills, with gaps particularly pronounced in Cambridgeshire and Fenland, where educational barriers persist. At the same time, the sector underpins efforts to tackle urgent challenges in housing, energy, transport and sustainability, placing it at the heart of growth and net-zero
commitments.

Cambridge Science Centre’s Building a Better Future Programme responds by embedding STEM in this real-world context. From April 2026 to March 2027, we will deliver exhibits, hands-on labs, community sessions and challenge-based learning at Cambridge Science Park and Inspire Wisbech, culminating in The Big Question Challenge, a platform for young people to share ideas on infrastructure, housing and neighbourhood design.

Engaging Young People

The Programme will engage well over 12,000 young people (plus their families, reaching up to an estimated 23,500), with a strong focus on underserved communities. It will spark curiosity, build confidence and connect learning to pathways into skilled careers across the built environment to support sustainable, inclusive regional growth.

Working in collaboration with industry partners, experts in this field, we will surface and translate the complexities of the Built Environment sector into curiosity-led experiences. Together, we are breaking down barriers to STEM, opening doors for young people who might otherwise be left behind, and creating opportunities that can change lives.
