We celebrate local Scientists at special event

We hosted a special event this week to honour the scientists and organisations that help bring its interactive Lab space to life.

The ‘Superheroes’ event celebrated the contributions of experts from leading local companies, including Nuclera, AstraZeneca, Illumina, and Owlstone Medical, who generously share their time and expertise to inspire the next generation of scientists.

A key highlight of the event was the chance for local schoolchildren from Milton Road Primary School to meet the scientists featured as case studies in the Lab space.

Dao Burt (Illumina), Christina Dumitriu Jackson (AstraZeneca), and Sunidhi Shetty (Nuclera) took part in a lively Q&A session, sharing their personal journeys into science, discussing their work, and highlighting the wide range of opportunities in STEM careers. Students asked insightful questions, from how the scientists chose their careers and their favourite school subjects to the future impact of AI on science and how cancer is treated.

Following the Q&A, the children took part in one of Cambridge Science Centre’s engaging, curriculum-linked workshops, Chain Reaction, reinforcing key scientific concepts through hands-on exploration.

“The generosity of our local science community is what makes this space so special,” said Rebecca Porter, CEO of Cambridge Science Centre. “By sharing their experiences and insights, these incredible scientists are not only making science more relatable but also showing young people that a future in STEM is within their reach. We are immensely grateful for their support.”

The event highlighted the power of industry collaboration in making science accessible, engaging, and inspiring for children.
